There's a lot of controversy of the Capital Metro plan for 'urban rail.' I'm going to call it that because those that support 'Commuter Rail' in Austin think this plan sucks. I don't currently ride public transportation, so take my opinion for what it's worth.
Here's what I do know. We need to improve public transportation in Austin. The bus system sucks. I have an employee that rides two buses to work every day and still walks about half a mile to the office. Not downtown with sidewalks and buildings, but has the occassional run in with a deer here in the canyon where our office is. (you city folks are going...a DEER? OMG! I do that, too).
Let's get on the bandwagon. Get a train started here, then we can expand to 'Light Rail' and get more stops closer to where people need them. A step is a step and if we don't act now when will we ever.
I'm confident the active political citizens of Austin will demand improvements on Rail before the first train makes its stop. Let's get it going and then let's bitch about expanding it. Let's not bitch about this isn't exactly what where we want it to stop so we go back to the drawing board and 10 years from now still don't have any rail system for public transportation in Austin.
There, local politics. I did it.
