I took a little flak for my criticism of the Grammy Award for Amy Winehouse. I was not pleased that the show made arrangements for her because she had visa troubles, nor was I very plussed that she won. While I do think she has talent, I just don't think she should be encouraged.
Let me tell you why.
I have had two addicts in my life. One was a horrible relationship and another was a CEO that terrorized me and my staff with coke-fueled rants and bizarre behavior. Including calling me 42 times in a row at 3:30 in the morning. Oh, and also threatening my life if I crossed him.
So, I have very low tolerance for addicts. They should either be forced into rehab or locked up as far as I am concerned. There is nothing glamorous about an addict and it isn't just self-destructive behavior so don't say "They are only hurting themselves." Not true, they hurt everyone around them and cause anguish in people's lives. Not to mention turmoil and chaos and sometimes financial ruin.
That's why when I see a photo of a woman with coke residue in her nose and clearly an addict, I don't celebrate their talent and fame. I think they should be in jail or rehab. Take your pick, but neither of those include the cover of a magazine or accepting an award for how great they are. Because they are not.

she accepted an award based on her brilliant music, not her shoddy and pathetic lifestyle.

I thought she WAS in treatment. People at least deserve a chance to get better. Her receiving a Grammy for her work (which was recorded WAY before her life spiralled out of control) has nothing to do with her personal life.
You're the one being judgmental, aren't you? A little bit?
I'm sorry about your experiences, but I don't know what they have to do with a troubled young woman across the pond who you don't even know.
