In spite of myself

A.) I'm posting yet another YouTube B.) I genuinely thought this was hilarious.

Cell phones don't pop popcorn

I can't believe this video about cell phones is still making the rounds on YouTube. What I really love is when we posted a video response just as a goof in my office the other day it's already received 10,000 views.

I also love how people STILL think it's real and the morons that think I'm wearing a white lab coat...that's a linen blazer you 'tards.

Still 10?

There are still 10 states I have not visited. Weird...but then I looked at them and was ok with it. What am I really missing in those flyover states on the left and besides great Angela Lansbury drives through the autumn woods, what am I really missing in Vermont?

Who had a good weekend?

I did! I did! Friday night we went to see the Altar Boyz (again) and met up with the cast later for drinks. They are lots of fun and just cute as bugs. Went to the lake again Saturday and got burnt...again. ---Lots of repeats this weekend...but oh, so much fun. B was finally in town and loved the lake and got to meet everyone. Saturday night we went to III Forks for a great dinner and came home and just passed out on the sofa in a food coma.

JM finally hosted a brunch and when we weren't talking about real estate or burning the bacon it was awesome.

so much for some kind of statement...

I bought some Tom's of Maine Lavender deodorant and some corn starch today...about 4:45 I got a whiff of myself. DAYUM....I was stank, y'all. Still not antiperspirant, though.

I stink

I have stopped wearing antiperspirant or deodorant. It's very very hot here in Texas. I sweat. I stink. I don't care. Well, yes...I do care. But, I'm not sure what I'm going to do about it other than take a shower every day. In my defense, I don't stink until way late in the day and I've been outside...

And...it's not a bad stink like you can smell me when I walk in the room. But if you were leaning over my shoulder reading this right now you'd go..'Uhm, dude, you got a little b.o. action goin'."

I'm thinking of just buying some talcum powder. I'm not sure what my sudden opposition to antiperspirant is, maybe it's the aluminum that blocks the pores I think is unhealthy and may cause Alzheimer's or maybe it's that I usually buy antiperspirant at the grocery and I rarely go to that kind of store.

These are the things that worry my pretty little head...

OMG

Ugh....I just exercised. Someone must be nervous about a visitor this weekend! Can I lose 3 pounds in 36 hours? I don't think so because I am very close to an emergency room visit right now...but in my defense it is 9 pm and 93 degrees....

Dobson said what?

Focus on the Family fearmonger and Christian Terrorist, James Dobson has said something that will make you spit your morning coffee right out.

"I think he's deliberately distorting the traditional understanding of the Bible to fit his own world view, his own confused theology," Dobson said, adding that Obama is "dragging biblical understanding through the gutter."
He's talking about something Obama said about the Bible referring to slavery and subjugation of women and all those things in the Old Testament we tend to ignore.

But Dobson, ever the Christian Terrorist, only uses the Bible to spout his own versions of hate and dictates from his theological point of view. So, that is ok.

Here are some choice quotes from the ignoramous James Dobson and his fatwa on America:

"Homosexuals are not monogamous. They want to destroy the institution of marriage. It will destroy marriage. It will destroy the Earth."
I certainly believe that God is displeased with America for its pride and arrogance, for killing 40 million unborn babies, for the universality of profanity and for other forms of immorality. However, rather than trying to forge a direct cause-and-effect relationship between the terrorist attacks and America’s abandonment of biblical principles, which I think is wrong, we need to accept the truth that this nation will suffer in many ways for departing from the principles of righteousness. "The wages of sin is death,"

There's a lot more dumbass things this man says to distort Christianity and the Bible, but I don't have time to dig them up and call this man out....I wonder if any media outlet could do that...I mean isn't that what they should do when some whack job calls out a presidential nominee? And the call the media liberal. RIGHT....

I have a watch problem

Ok, so as a dude, I reserve the right to be into certain things...it's what we do. For some reason, I am really into watches. It started when I received my very first Swatch watch (the yellow one pictured here) when I was 15. My mom went all the way to Atlanta to get it for me.
watches.jpg
Some might think this is bizarre to have this many watches, but I consider it more of a collection than anything else. I mean after all, I've had several of these watches for more than 20 years.

My latest project is restoring my grandfather's Elgin watch he was wearing when he died. It's a beautiful gold 17 jewel classic Elgin and the last time it told time was in 1969. I can not wait to have it fully restored. I never got to meet my grandfather and to have that watch on my wrist and have it tell me what time it is will be just an amazing connection to my namesake.

So, do you have anything you collect? Something maybe you have too many of right now, but wouldn't get rid of in a million years?

Well, happy Tuesday...I guess

I'm supposed to be preparing for a presentation on Time Management, but instead I'm reading some blogs, catching up on news and thinking about the weekend. The week is uneventful, but I'm looking forward to Friday at noon. Someone's coming to visit and I do enjoy a visitor. Plus, it gives me the whole week to think of fun things to do!

Altar Boyz

I interviewed the Altar Boyz cast last week. I wasn't the cameraman, but clearly we needed a tripod. The show is great and the cast is great. You should totally go see it at the Zach while it's here.

The strangest invite I've received...

Good morning! You are invited to join the lawyers and staff of Austin law firm Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, along with clients and friends to an advance preview of Disney's Beauty and the Beast put on by Zilker Theatre Productions.
Seriously? This is what I'd call a stretch for a tie-in. Good try though, pr hack.

RIP George Carlin

Man, he was a funny F*ck. I saw him in Dallas. He was probably most famous for his acerbic wit and clearing away the B.S. when it came to social commentary. His Seven Words You Can't Say On Television is after the jump if you haven't seen it.

Over the top beyond beyond...

I am heading back to Austin but I have a few notes about my first trip to Vegas. First off...this suite...30th floor at the Bellagio with marble everywhere...2 bedrooms and FIVE bathrooms. I kid you not....F.I.V.E. There are also seven flat screen televisions in here and a velvet sofa in the living room. Tagging along on JM's business trips are clearly something I heartily endorse.
bellagio.JPG
We did manage to leave the room to go see Elton John's show at Ceasar's Palace. Amazing show. It was his 200th and they gave us all feather boas when we entered the theatre. We were on the fifth row and after the first two songs we ran out of adjectives to describe it.

Oh, I did stop in the casino for a minute...I lost $140 in about 2 minutes. So, that's that.

What else...don't believe the story about it's a dry heat. It is and I've used a bucketload of moisturizer since I've been here and you don't get drenched in sweat...but it's f'ing hot.

There's an amazing amount of blind drunk people walking like zombies in this town. Gobs of middle America with their eyes glazed over. It is also overstimulating here. I had a mild seizure before lunch. And...since I've been here I've had no idea what time it is. Every clock I've seen tells different time and during the day it's just as blazing bright at 7 am as it is at 7 pm.

Vegas or Bust?

I'm off to Las Vegas this afternoon for my first ever trip to "Sin City" and it will clearly be done right. A limo will pick me up and take me to a penthouse suite at the Bellagio and Saturday night we have tickets to see Elton John. I am tagging along on a JM business trip...he's in a industry that still has major perks. I remember when I worked for a company that let you stay in nice hotels and rent a nice car...not anymore. When I travel now the nicest hotel we can stay in is a Marriott and we have to rent the compact car size. :(

I may play some nickel slots or something, but I'm not much of a gambler.

Bad Habit/Good Result?

thomps.jpgI have a bad habit of buying a CD because I think the guy on the cover is good looking. In my defense, the music usually turns out to be really good. Today I bought Teddy Thompson's CD, aptly titled, "A Piece of What You Need." I believe it, Teddy, you just may have a piece of what I need. (did I just channel Michael?)

Previous to this CD, I purchased Dan Barnes latest and I've been enjoying it as well.

There's my music recommendations for the weekend. Do with it what you will.

Should they stop serving alcohol on airlines?

Every few months or so you here about a drunk passenger doing something on an airline that boggles your mind. Remember the guy that took a dump on the service cart? This morning I read that some guy tried to set the plane on fire when the attendants refused to serve him any more.

Maybe alcohol and the altitude bring out the stupid in people...well, personally, I don't think it takes a lot to bring out the stupid in people.

Things you can't tell by looking at them

I'm learning a lot from the straight guys on my staff. But, in all fairness, they are learning from me, too. Here's a few things I now know about:

  • When something is cool or you show extreme coolness, it's "clutch" as in, "Dude, that's clutch."
  • The positive affirmation of your coolness is followed by touching the knuckles of your closed fist. This has replaced the high-five.
  • Worrying about "getting fat" is universal and not just a girl thing or a gay man thing. They obsess...some more than others, but it is shocking how many conversations we have about the fear of getting fat.
  • Tits are a universal conversation topic and can be injected into any conversation...at any time.
  • Straight guys live in fear of getting in trouble by their wife/girlfriend...or any random girl that exists.
  • Straight guys are very sensitive and it is easy to hurt their feelings. I find myself apologizing a lot.
  • There's a lot more and I'll keep adding to this, because it's fascinating. The top thing I would say they are learning from me is about how to dress. They are learning not to carry big fat wallets in their pockets or fill them with cell phones and keys. It's a constant refrain in our office, "It is ruining the line of your pants."

Jesus called me on his cell phone...

I got to interview the cast from Altar Boyz today. They are all so very cute and we had a great time. At the end I wanted to invite them all out for milkshakes and gossip! I'll post the video soon to share it with y'all. James LaRosa is playing Abraham and he's from Queens, NY. I remember him because he said how much he liked my seersucker suit three times in the interview.

Joshua Cruz is also in the cast and was terribly sweet and animated. I just thought we should be best friends.

They were all great and if you are in Austin and haven't bought tickets to go see Altar Boyz, then shame on you. It's a great show and is in the perfect theatre at Zach. So GO! And be sure to tell Mark Christine I said hello...I thought he was the cutest.

    Still got it...

Tucked and pulled Joan Rivers was asked to leave a British TV show after she called Russell Crowe an F'ing A-hole. The show was live with no delay so they couldn't bleep her. When they asked her to leave she apologized and said she assumed it would be bleeped, but it reminded her of her wedding night...she was asked to leave in the middle of that, too.

There are bills to pay, quarterly taxes that I'm supposed to send off but where are the vouchers my accountant sent, the garage light motion sensor light thing is broken, I have receipts all over the place that need to be dealt with, there's dead plants in the living room, my office is a disaster of piles of papers and notes, the bathroom light fixture is in need of attention, the west facing windows need something done to them because the sun is beating in on them and the air conditioner is working extra hard, the kitchen faucet has a small leak...

    Day 30...

Today marked our 30th day of record-breaking heat here in Austin. Today's high was 101 and that's the tenth day of 100 degree heat in the 30 day stretch of this heat wave. Summer starts tomorrow so I guess we'll see if this will be the heat we can expect all summer.

Guess that means there will be many more weekend trips out of here all summer.

Is this a dilema or a pickle?

I do not have any white bucs. I'm just loathe to wear my seersucker without them. I know some people will accept the cognac or black loafer, and I also know that in Texas no one I know even understands this dilemma. What it means is that my seersucker stays in the closet until the white bucs arrive from Brooks Brothers. ARRRRGH.

If you think I'm kidding, read this thread of men in South Carolina having a lengthy discussion on this very topic.

    Goodbye Colgate :(

I have used Colgate since I started brushing my own teeth. I couldn't imagine using any other brand. But, there's a problem....Colgate contains sodium lauryl sulfate. That's the chemical that makes your toothpaste foam. Toothpaste doesn't need to foam. That chemical can cause canker sores (at the very least). So, I've stopped using it.

Now, I'm using Tom's of Maine. I'll adapt. I'm an agent of change. I embrace change. :(

This clip from the Denise Richards show means that if you watch it, I won't have provide any editorial comment afterwards. And you know how much I love an editorial comment. Just behold...

Aw hell, I changed my mind....
First off that chiropractor has clearly paid for this in content advertising. Way to get sponsor dollars for your show! And as far as the foot bath goes, I can do that at home with some warm water and epsom salts and it just says quack quack to me to tell me you pulled out poisons from my feet. Jesus the people in L.A. will buy anything won't they?

I also loved the cold laser. It did indeed look as if it was curing all her ills.

And thanks Denise for taking the time out of your crazy life!! to introduce a commercial. Whew! I see how you are so busy.

    Arson!

Someone deliberately set the Texas Governor's Mansion on fire and it's pretty much a loss. It will apparently remain eligible for its National Historical Register listing if a certain percentage of the building is salvageable.
    Governor%27s%20Mansion%20fire.jpg
There is video that shows someone throwing a "molotov cocktail" onto the second floor balcony. The controversy that follows is that the building is supposed to be one of the most secure sites in Austin. Oops!

The mansion was completed in 1856 and was currently undergoing a $10 million restoration...the first major renovations since 1914. It was the fourth oldest continually inhabited executive residence in the United States.

    Governor's Mansion gutted by fire

The first news wasn't clear about what was going on, but the Governor's Mansion was on fire.. And then we heard it was bad. The building's pretty much a loss. And, the Fire Marshal thinks it may be arson.

Here's a video of the coverage.

    Keep your head down...

If you got a job, I guess the advice I would give is you better keep it!

Jobless rates jumps to 5.5% biggest rise since '86
WASHINGTON (AP) - The government reports the nation's unemployment rate jumped to 5.5% in May - the biggest monthly rise since 1986 - as nervous employers cut 49,000 jobs last month. It was a dramatic sign of a deeply troubled economy.(emphasis added)

The Labor Department's new report released Friday showed employment conditions worsening, reflecting the damage from housing, credit and financial crisis.

In a tight economy I would also cut back on expenses as much as I could and focus on my getting my debt cleared and increasing my savings. If layoffs are in your future you want to have a cushion so that fall isn't so hard. Normally, I would say three months savings would do the trick. However, with unemployment rates on the rise I think I'd put that at six months. It may take you that long to recover and find a new job.

In the 1999 recession it took me 14 months and then we had 9/11 which started it all over again for me. SHUDDER.

Good luck and God speed!! I'll be busy stuffing cash in my mattress now.

    Falling in love again...

I fell in love with Austin all over again tonight. Coming around the curve on I-35 at 10:00 p.m. and seeing the skyline and the lights of the city and I thought, "I'm home." I'd been in San Antonio and while it's an ok place, it's not home. It was good to remember that.

As you may know, I have a bit of wanderlust in me. I've lived in Austin longer than anywhere else in my adult life and I keep getting these feelings like it's time to move on. Maybe it's not time to move on. Maybe it's time to settle in.

Who knows? If the next thing I say is that I'm moving to Vancouver or something just forget you ever read this.

Anyway, I had a great weekend with JS in SF and am done traveling for a little while I hope. I have big plans to clean out my closet and make room for my new summer wardrobe this weekend. Come over and we'll make it a party!
