From a story about a mugging today: Austin police say there are more robberies Downtown than in any other part of the city because criminals know more people are likely to be intoxicated and viewed as easy prey.
From a story yesterday: APD Police Chief wants to train his officers to draw blood from suspected drunk drivers.
My response: Dear Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo. If you KNOW there are more robberies in downtown Austin then why aren't you stepping up patrols...being more visible...doing something to combat the crime there instead of coming up with new and exciting ways to violate the civil rights of people, having police officers put themselves and others at risk by drawing blood from people on the side of the road and ordering new uniforms?
Jesus, you are really a piece of work...you know that?

I don't like how the new APD badges look like Tony Llama belt buckles and the police cars have an LAPD appearance. APD revised their badge design 8 years ago and it looked great. Now Art wants APD to look like his PD. Power promotes corruption.
The fact that the state of CA paid him close to $1M for some "stress in the line of duty" complaint tells me he's all about Art Acevado and less about Austin.
Art Acevado is disrespecting our culture. I like his style of discipline - unfortunately, the arbitrators are going to hand his ass to him on some of his rulings.

One is not related to the other. I'm sure you've seen the APD "DWI ENFORCEMENT" vehicles. Those are the folks he wants to train to draw blood.
Personally, I think it's a good idea. We obviously can't write laws tight enough so that folks don't skirt them, and attorneys are continually coming up with new and innovative ways to get people off the hook when they're CLEARLY drunk. Blood tests are already done in plenty of jurisdictions, and they've been challenged multiple times - they don't violate anyone's civil rights.
They have stepped up patrols downtown, and they are clearly quite visible. If I recall, it was you who said we "don't need any more cops in Austin until they learn how to not beat people up".
Your bleeding heart can't have it both ways...

I don't think I said we don't need any more cops until they stop beating people up...maybe until they stop shooting people.
My bleeding heart just doesn't want POLICE sticking a needle in anybody's arm. People go to school to learn how to do that, it's a profession...a career, if you will....And...money is money...they may not be related, CH, but you of all people know that the money has to come from somewhere.
Instead of asking the feds or the city or the state for money for this stupid idea, why not ask for money for more patrols downtown?
They have increased patrols? Really? That's why we are seeing the latest reports showing crime is up in Austin, murders are up for the 2nd year in a row....
So, don't call me a bleeding heart liberal...I'm all for tough on crime...just focus on the god damn crime and not sticking people with needles when it's not your f'ing job.

Wasn't Acevedo the name of the politically motivated police captain on "The Shield"?
German Politzei had the duty to draw blood from suspected drunk drivers way back in 1972 while I was stationed there with the U. S. Army. They were very proficient at it...it's not brain surgery, you know. And guess what, Germany did not have nearly the problem with drunk drivers as we do. And there was a Gasthaus serving beer on nearly every corner.
They will not have to draw blood from CH. His bleeding heart will furnish more than required for a simple blood alcohol test.
