That's right...no NBC in Austin. Time Warner Cable says that KXAN wants money for something that's free. There is nothing that's free. The programming, the news, the staffing...nothing is free.

Time Warner pays channels like Bravo and The Learning Channel and they play commercials, but they won't pay KXAN. These type of payments are not going away, they are being made by every other cable or satellite provider in the country...except Time Warner.
If you are ok with missing 30 Rock, The Office and SNL...and oh..the Super Bowl..then get angry with KXAN and yell about it. Otherwise call Time Warner or swith from Time Warner to one fo the other cable service providers offered in Austin.
Time Warner Cable just doesn't want to pay what every other provider is paying for. The quality programming people receive from KXAN and NBC. But, they're paying to bring you Discovery and Oxygen Network...so enjoy those!

It's an exaggeration to say that the implication of this spat is "no NBC in Austin." It's just no NBC on Austin's Time-Warner system. You can still use an antenna to pull the signal – I use a digital TV converter and the picture is better than cable – or you could switch to Grande...

It's also a bit misleading to imply that KXAN's just being reasonable since everybody else (much smaller fish) caved. Other broadcast affiliates aren't doing this - because the fair-market value of their signal is zero (after advertisers pay), since you can pull it down for free with an antenna. Time Warner gets paid to bring it to you on a cable so you don't HAVE to run an antenna, and they deserve to keep that money.

Nothing is free? How about the chunk of the broadcast spectrum the government gives KXAN? Well, that's technically not free but we already pay for that via taxes, so close enough.
Both sides are being a little unreasonable here. If Time Warner would just offer ala carte programming, we could decide what channels to keep and what to drop no matter what fees the channels decide to charge.
I didn't think both sides would go this far and call each other's bluff. But I doubt that this game of chicken will last much longer.

I still get KXAN. I have an HD antenna. I haven't had cable for 4 years now.
